Carel Fabritius Collection

Carel Fabritius is said to be one of Rembrandt's most remarkable students and one of most talented artists of the 17th Century. Commonly likened to Vermeer, he stands for his use of light backgrounds and intense dark objects to create the most captivating illusions of the era. However, today we only have a handful of works to remember him, including The Goldfinch, painted in 1654. Tragically, Fabritius passed away at the young age of 32 due to a huge gunpowder magazine explosion that devastated a quarter of the city of Delft. It is likely that many of his works were lost in the same explosion that destroyed his studio, making The Goldfinch even more significant.
